Child Height Predictor
Estimate your child's potential adult height using common calculation methods.

Understanding Height Prediction
A child's adult height is influenced by a combination of genetics (primarily from parents) and environmental factors (like nutrition and overall health). This calculator uses two common methods to provide an estimate of potential adult height.
How to Use the Calculator
- Child's Information: Select the child's gender. Enter their current age in years and months. Enter their current height and select the unit (cm or inches).
- Parental Heights: Enter the biological mother's and father's adult heights, selecting the appropriate units for each.
- Click "Predict Adult Height."
Interpreting Your Results
The calculator provides estimates from two different methods:
- Method 1: Mid-Parental Height (Tanner Method):
- This is a simple genetic estimate. It calculates a mid-point from parental heights and adjusts for the child's gender.
- Formula for boys: `((Mother's Height + Father's Height) / 2) + 6.5 cm`
- Formula for girls: `((Mother's Height + Father's Height) / 2) - 6.5 cm`
- An estimated range (e.g., +/- 8.5 cm or 3.3 inches) is often associated with this method to account for natural variation.
- Method 2: Age & Current Height Adjusted Estimate:
- This method considers the child's current height and age, along with their gender. It estimates adult height by projecting current growth based on average percentage of adult height achieved at different ages (for children aged 1-18 years).
- Formula: `(Child's Current Height / Approximate Growth Percentage for Age & Gender)`
- The growth percentages used are approximations based on typical child development patterns. This method is generally not applicable for children under 1 year or over 18 years for whom growth is largely complete or too variable.
The results from both methods are estimates. It's common for different methods to yield slightly different predictions.
Factors Influencing Adult Height
- Genetics: This is the most significant factor, with parental heights playing a key role.
- Nutrition: Adequate nutrition, especially during childhood and adolescence, is crucial for reaching full growth potential.
- Overall Health: Chronic illnesses or certain medical conditions can affect growth.
- Hormones: Growth hormone, thyroid hormones, and sex hormones all play vital roles in growth.
- Timing of Puberty: Children who enter puberty earlier may finish growing sooner than those who enter it later.
Limitations
- Estimates Only: These are predictions, not guarantees. Actual adult height can vary.
- Average Data: The "Age & Current Height Adjusted Estimate" uses average growth data. Individual growth patterns can differ.
- No Bone Age: The most accurate height predictions often involve assessing "bone age" through an X-ray, which this calculator does not do.
- Exceptional Circumstances: Does not account for specific genetic conditions or health issues that might significantly impact growth.
