Understanding Your Final Grade Calculation

This calculator helps you determine the minimum score needed on your final exam or assignment to achieve your target overall grade for the course. It works by considering the grades and weights of the components you've already completed.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Add Components: Click "+ Add Assignment/Test" for each graded item completed *before* the final exam.
  2. Enter Component Info (for each row):
    • Component Name (Optional): Label the item (e.g., "Midterm", "Homework Avg").
    • Grade (%): Enter the percentage score you received (0-100).
    • Weight (%): Enter how much this component is worth towards your final course grade (check your syllabus).
  3. Remove Components (Optional): Click 'X' to remove a row.
  4. Final Exam Weight (%): Enter the percentage weight of the final exam/assignment itself.
  5. Desired Course Grade (%): Enter the overall final percentage grade you hope to achieve.
  6. Click "Calculate Required Final Grade."

Important: Ensure the weights of all components entered PLUS the final exam weight add up to 100% for the most accurate calculation reflecting your syllabus. The calculator will warn you if they don't.

Interpreting Your Results

How it's Calculated

The calculator first determines the total weighted score you've earned so far from the components entered (`Sum of (Grade_i * Weight_i / 100)`). It then calculates the score needed on the final component, considering its weight, to bring the total weighted average up to your desired overall grade.

Formula: `Required Final (%) = [ Desired Grade (%) - Sum of (Current Component Grade_i % * Current Component Weight_i %) ] / Final Weight %` (where weights are decimals).
