This calculator uses a standard 4.0 GPA scale (A/A+=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, etc.).
Understanding GPA
GPA, or Grade Point Average, is a standard way to measure academic achievement. It's calculated by dividing the total amount of grade points earned by the total amount of credit hours attempted. Your GPA is often used for university admissions, scholarship applications, and sometimes by employers.
How to Use the Calculator
- Add Courses:** For each course you want to include, click the "+ Add Course" button. A new row will appear.
- Enter Course Info (for each row):**
- Course Name (Optional):** Enter a name or code for the course (e.g., "ENGL 101").
- Grade:** Select the letter grade you received for the course (A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D, F).
- Credits/Hours:** Enter the number of credits or credit hours the course was worth (e.g., 3, 4, 15). This must be a positive number.
- Remove Courses (Optional):** Click the 'X' button next to any row to remove it.
- Calculate:** Once all courses are entered with valid credits (>0), click the "Calculate GPA" button.
Note on Grading Scale:** This calculator uses a common 4.0 scale with +/- modifiers:
- A+ = 4.0
- A = 4.0
- A- = 3.7
- B+ = 3.3
- B = 3.0
- B- = 2.7
- C+ = 2.3
- C = 2.0
- C- = 1.7
- D = 1.0
- F = 0.0
Note: Some institutions use a 4.3 scale for A+ or have different point values. This calculator strictly uses the scale above.
How GPA is Calculated
- Grade Points:** Each letter grade is converted to its corresponding grade point value based on the 4.0 scale shown above.
- Quality Points:** For each course, the grade points are multiplied by the number of credits for that course. (Quality Points = Grade Points × Credits).
- Total Quality Points:** The quality points for all courses with valid grades and credits (>0) are added together.
- Total Credits:** The credits for all courses with valid grades and credits (>0) are added together.
- GPA Calculation:** Total Quality Points are divided by Total Credits Attempted. (GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credits).
Limitations
- Scale Variations:** This calculator uses one specific 4.0 scale. Your institution might use a different scale (e.g., different points for +/-, no +/-, different max value). Always check your institution's specific grading policies.
- Weighted Courses:** Does not automatically account for weighted courses (like AP, IB, or Honors) unless your selected grade already reflects a weighted point value recognized by the scale.
- Pass/Fail, Withdrawals:** Does not typically include Pass/Fail courses, Incompletes, or Withdrawals in the GPA calculation (though policies vary). Courses with 0 credits entered are ignored.
- Transfer Credits:** How transfer credits impact GPA varies significantly by institution.
Always refer to your official transcript and your institution's specific policies for official GPA calculations.
