MinuteMetric

Home Energy Use Estimator

Estimate the electricity consumption (kWh) and cost of individual appliances.

Appliance Details & Usage

Appliance Power
Selecting an appliance fills average wattage (when running). You can override below.
Check appliance label or manual. Wattage is power used *when running* (unless noted).
Usage Pattern
Average hours the appliance is drawing power each day it's used.
For cycling appliances like fridges, preset wattage is average over time; use 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. For others (kettle, washer), estimate total 'on' time per day.
Electricity Cost
Check your electricity bill for your rate (e.g., $0.30 NZD). Enter symbol.

Understanding Appliance Energy Use

Knowing how much electricity your appliances consume can help you understand your energy bill and identify opportunities for savings. This calculator estimates the energy usage (in kilowatt-hours, kWh) and approximate cost for a single appliance based on its power rating (wattage) and how often you use it.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Appliance Power:
    • You can either select a common appliance from the dropdown to get a preset average wattage (usually the power drawn *while actively running*), or select "Enter Wattage Manually."
    • If entering manually, or to refine the preset, input the appliance's power consumption in Watts. You can usually find this on the appliance's label, in its manual, or online.
  2. Usage Pattern:
    • Enter the average Hours Per Day the appliance is actively drawing power on the days it is used. For appliances that cycle on/off (like a fridge), the preset wattage may be an average over time, in which case you should enter 24 hours/day. For items used briefly (like a kettle or microwave), estimate the total 'on' time per day it's used.
    • Enter the number of Days Per Week the appliance is used.
  3. Electricity Cost: Enter your cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh) from your electricity bill. Update the currency symbol if needed.
  4. Click "Estimate Energy Use & Cost."

Actual energy consumption and costs may vary based on specific appliances, usage habits, electricity rates, and appliance cycling behaviour. Wattage presets are typical examples and may not match your specific model. Consult your electricity bill and appliance documentation for accurate figures.
